Pre/Postnatal Care
People often associate physical therapy with broken bones or sports injuries, but trained therapists in our profession also specialize in pre/postnatal care.
Physical therapists can help strengthen the body to cope with a growing baby and prepare for labor, delivery, and recovery from pregnancy. We also treat many common problems associated with the later stages of pregnancy such as back pain, pelvic pain, diastasis recti (separation between abdominal muscles), sciatica, edema, and Braxton-Hick’s contractions.
Physical therapy treatments can minimize discomfort during pregnancy and improve function for both mother and baby. Staying active and healthy during pregnancy can also help reduce the risk of injury or complications during labor/delivery, shorten recovery time after birth, and cut down on common postpartum problems such as diastasis recti, pelvic pain, and back pain.
Pre- and postnatal evaluation and treatments provided by our physical therapists can:
- Prepare muscles for the strains of pregnancy, childbirth, and recovery.
- Reduce discomfort during pregnancy.
- Improve function for mom and baby.
- Reduce injury or complications such as tearing or needing a cesarean section during labor and delivery.
- Reduce recovery time after birth.
